Self-Publishing

Self-publishing has become so enormously popular because it offers you the opportunity of having your work published almost instantly as a finished book, with the advantage of customers being able to order as many copies as they want. Here’s how I can help you become that self-published author – as a graphic designer, I am able to take your writing, illustration, and ideas and bring them together into one beautiful and cohesive book ready to go to press. However, I also bring a bit more to the table. As a published author, editor, and illustrator, I bring a broad range of skills to our work together to insure that you will publish a book you’ll truly be happy with.

What Will I Need?

For authors looking to self-publish, you will need several things – a finished manuscript, photographs and/or illustrations, and ideally, for picture books, a rough dummy or an idea where you would like the text and images to go. I realize not everyone may have a dummy, but it’s a good starting point, if you do. If not, it’s something we can work on to begin readying your book for print.

Where Will I Be Published?

A popular choice is through Amazon’s KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing). For picture books and shorter books like chapter books, KDP offers softcover only at this time. They have the advantage of offering your new book immediately on Amazon’s website on a print-on-demand (POD) basis, plus they offer several marketing and distribution opportunities. Learn more about KDP and see if this is a good fit for you. Another option is to print with IngramSpark, who offers both softcover and hardcover, and offers different distribution capabilities. Depending on your needs, it is sometimes the best option to print with both. If you wish to work with a standard printer, I can discuss options with you and will happily prepare your project to their specifications.

How Do I Get Started?

The first step, of course, is to have a completed manuscript! The next is to fill out a short form that tells me a little about you and your project. This will help me understand your needs and develop an appropriate plan for you. I am currently helping people publish picture books and chapter books. Please request this form, fill it out  and return to my e-mail address on the form. I will review and get back to you promptly. But first, please read my Working Together section to make sure that my way of working is right for you.

I look forward to hearing from you!
